During the latest PlayStation State of Play, Capcom revealed a new trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, the massive expansion heading to its action RPG in 2027.This trailer offered an enticing look at the new monsters, locale, story, and gameplay mechanics coming with the expansion.
Ascendance takes place several years after the ending of Monster Hunter Wilds, following the sudden arrival of the colossal Elder Dragon Lao-Shan Lung and the devastation it brings to the Forbidden Lands.
AdvertisementIn Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, Hunters will venture into the Skybound Eyrie, a new locale filled with floating islands, ancient ruins, and unfamiliar wildlife. New monsters include Araketa, a Bird Wyvern capable of controlling powerful air currents, and Gundoraja, an Elder Dragon that can manipulate storm clouds.
The expansion also introduces the Boost Bracer, a new piece of equipment attached to the Slinger that temporarily enhances the strengths of all 14 weapon types. Capcom says more weapon abilities and gameplay mechanics will be revealed closer to launch.
AdvertisementAs exciting as all of this looks, I really hope Capcom learned its lesson from the terrible state that Monster Hunter Wilds was released in, especially on PC. I reviewed the game and genuinely enjoyed it, despite already noticing several performance problems during the review period. Unfortunately, those problems became even worse after launch.
What frustrated me the most was watching Capcom continue adding monsters and events while it felt like the company was merely going through the motions when it came to addressing the game’s performance. Truthfully, I stopped playing after the first few months because I was tired of fighting the performance just as much as I was fighting the monsters, and that still bothers me because I really like the game.
AdvertisementMonster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance looks like it could pull me back in, but Capcom needs to make sure the expansion is technically ready when it arrives. The new monsters, Master Rank hunts, and Skybound Eyrie look fantastic, but I do not want to see history repeat itself.
And we won’t have to wait much longer to see more of Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, as the game will be in attendance during Toyko Game Show 2026, as well several other Capcom titles such as Mega Man: Dual Override (read our hands-on preview).
Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance will arrive in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
